Trump Will Keep Vow to Put Embassy in Jerusalem, Giuliani Says

Jerusalem is claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians as their capital.

President Donald Trump will keep his pledge to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said, despite Palestinian warnings that such a step would spark violence and sabotage the prospect of renewed peace talks.

"I believe it will change because I spoke a few days ago to President Trump and he spoke about the Iranian aggression, he spoke about Iran's commitment to destroy Israel, he spoke about the nature of this nuclear agreement and the danger it poses".

On Sunday, Jerusalem municipality announced the construction of about 670 homes in contested east Jerusalem.

Jerusalem al-Quds Deputy Mayor Meir Turgeman said a city planning committee had endorsed the construction of the new structures in the East Jerusalem al-Quds settlement of Gilo, adding that the initiative was among those held up due to pressure from the ex-US government.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is warning enemies who threaten Israel that they will end up in the "ash bin" of history.

The administration has remained quiet since then.

Yet when he was asked Monday about plans for moving the embassy, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said: "There's no decisions". The latest building announcements were just "a taste", he told Knesset members Wednesday. We can safely say that the American right-wing has not been as euphoric as the Israeli right-wing.

The move comes a month after the United Nations Security Council condemned settlements as "a flagrant violation of global law", in a vote that the U.S. did not veto that triggered vehement reactions in Tel Aviv.

As a Canadian-Israeli, I have read with interest the two contrasting views of the Israel-Palestine situation; I agree in part with letter writer Frank Rigby: not only are the settlements illegal, but I believe acquiring Palestinian's land is a violation of worldwide law.

Obama's administration, like much of the world, has warned that settlement expansion was gradually eating away at prospects for a two-state solution.
