Man robs Kansas bank to 'escape wife'

Lawrence Ripple

A pensioner has admitted to robbing a bank in Kansas after deciding he would rather be in jail than be at home with his wife.

So, the 70-year-old made a decision to rob a Kansas City, Kan., bank because he preferred prison to living with his wife.

In the lobby, he stopped, took a seat and told the guard he was the "guy he was looking for".

"Ripple wrote out his demand note in front of his wife ... and told her he'd rather be in jail than at home", an Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit said.

A sentencing date is still pending in the case.

A pensioner grabbed nearly $3,000 in a daring bank heist - before waiting in the lobby for police to arrest him because he would "rather be in jail than at home with his wife".

The guard snatched the money away from Ripple and called cops, who responded from nearby police headquarters.

Ripple faces up to 20 years in prison for the robbery.

Ripple was released on bond at his September arraignment and left the courthouse with his wife by his side.

Despite their row, however, Ripple's wife accompanied him to court in a show of solidarity with her husband.

An FBI agent wrote in the affidavit that Ripple had earlier been arguing with his wife and that he 'no longer wanted to be in that situation'.
