Parents: Popular Teething Toy Is Rife With Mold

She claims to have been addressing another concern - cutting off the rubber giraffe's legs, as they are thought to be a choking hazard - when she discovered the inside of toy her daughter had been chewing on for was hiding black mold contamination.

A popular teething toy for babies is making the rounds on social media this week after photos of the product filled with mold went viral.

Chianese said she was cleaning the toy and noticed a "musty smell".

'Smelly, ugly mold living in my infant's favourite chew toy!' However, Vuilli, the manufacture behind the toy has defended the product, arguing that it's perfectly safe as long as parents follow the cleaning instructions.

Another Amazon reviewer tried to alert others to what she found when she cut the legs off her child's teething toy and even shared a picture for proof.

If your child inhales or swallows moldy material on a toy once, they will most likely be OK, Jennifer Haythe, M.D., an assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, tells SELF.

Sophie is a squeaky rubber toy, which is so pricey because, the marketers tell us, she's made in France from natural rubber and painted with food-grade pigments.

Sophie the Giraffe has been a newborn must-have for literally decades now.

A spokesperson for Sophie the Giraffe told the "cleaning instructions have to be carefully respected".

Ms Chianese isn't the only parent to find something growing inside the toy.

There have been multiple reports of black mold or mildew inside the hollow giraffes, and it's turning some parents off of an item that's been trending in American parent circles since 2008. They can also be disinfected with a solution of 1/2 cup Clorox bleach per gallon of water. "Soak them for five minutes, rinse and air dry", the publication suggests.

The toy's manufacturer instructed parents to clean the surface with a damp cloth, rather than submerging it in water.

"Sophie the Giraffe" toy is manufactured under the French company name "Vulli", the company printed a warning on the toy that it could be completely damaged if the product drowns in water.

'We thus would like to emphasize on the fact that is it important, while cleaning the product, that no water gets inside the whole'.

Schraenen added that neither Oprea or Chianese have contacted the company. It is hard to further comment on their situation, as the products have not been examined.
