Milo Yiannopoulos, Martin Shkreli Campus Event Cancelled Due to Protests

Protesters barricaded the entrance to an event featuring Milo Yiannopoulos and Martin Shkreli at UC Davis on Jan. 13 2016

Martin Shkreli, a pharmaceutical executive who gained recognition after raising the price of Daraprim, an HIV medication, from $13.50 to $750 per unit, was set to speak at the event with Yiannopoulos, but only briefly took photos with fans before being escorted away.

-Colleges now face steeper barriers, including a larger bill for security, if they want to invite a controversial speaker to campus.

Milo Yiannopoulos and the campus Republican Club lashed out after the event was canceled by marching on the campus of UC Davis.

Students confronted police and caused a big enough commotion to shut the event down. "We will not stand for the regressive left perpetuating violence, censoring speech, and spreading hate", the group said on its Facebook page.

Milo Yiannopolus is scheduled to speak at Berkely on February 1st, which may prove even more contentious. "The use of campus facilities and resources to host and therefore legitimize a white nationalist runs completely counter to the stated goals of the University of California and serves as a direct threat towards traditionally marginalized groups on campus".

While there is disagreement about what happened, Yiannopoulos did return to campus yesterday.

At UC Berkeley, despite emails from students demanding the event be canceled, the liberal campus will host the conservative provocateur on February 1.

As for Shkreli, he is now under federal indictment for securities fraud and awaiting trial.

When asked for comment, UC Davis Associate Director Andy Fell said, "To reiterate the statement we issued last night, the DCR cancelled last night's event on the advice of UC Davis police and officials because it was no longer possible to continue the event safely".

"The decision was made initially because the lives of the officers were threatened", Mendoza told KCRA. He was recently temporarily banned from Twitter for harassing Teen Vogue editor Lauren Duca.

Yiannopoulos claimed the university's administration forced his speech to be canceled. Our community is founded on principles of respect for all views, even those that we personally find repellent. The University also said that there was no property damage during the event and that one person was arrested inside the venue earlier in the evening.

Do you think the protestors went too far by throwing feces at Shkreli or did he deserve this treatment? "A U is at its best when it listens to & critically engages opposing views", Hexter tweeted.
