Why Gus Malzahn wants Auburn's next offensive coordinator to run Tigers' offense

Now Lashele has left to join Randy Edsall's staff at UConn, a move that looks good for the Huskies and has left a high-profile spot on Gus Malzahn's staff open at Auburn.

Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is leaving the Tigers program to take the same job at the University of CT. Benedict was previously the second man in charge in the Tigers' athletic department before coming to UConn, perhaps he sees Lashlee as the flawless coach-in-waiting and implied as such during the hiring process. The rushing offense surged to 318.9 yards per game, while the passing offense was effective as the Tigers completed 72.5 percent of their passes for 194.5 yards per game during that six-game stretch.

Malzahn is expected to name a replacement for Lashlee in the near future. Our offenses have achieved great success and he has been a big part of that. He's taking a significant pay cut - $600,000 to $350,000 - for the opportunity to run his own show. Briles was speculated as a candidate because of his friendship with Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and because former Baylor quarterback Jarrett Stidham transferred to Auburn last month. I've know Rhett for two decades and he's a man of great character and integrity and this is another step towards his goal to become a head coach.

It's a sentiment in line with the decision Malzahn made early last season, when he ceded play-calling duties to Lashlee full-time after the team's 1-2 start and felt he needed to take a more hands-off approach to the offense while focusing on being a head coach. "I want to wish he and his wife, Lauren, all the best in this new endeavor". He was a back-up quarterback for the Razorbacks before graduating in 2006.

He actually played for Mazlahn in high school before attending Arkansas, where he played quarterback and backed up former first-round pick Matt Jones. The couple has four children: twin boys Thomas and Hudson, and twin daughters Rowyn and Scarlet.
