Tesla Begins Autopilot Updates To A Select Few

Tesla wasn't able to distribute the Enhanced Autopilot update in mid-December. Tesla has not officially announced when exactly those updates will arrive, but Musk has previously stated that he believes the vehicles will be capable of full autonomy by the end of 2017. The update is released to give some comfort to owners with the new self-driving-hardware vehicle in traffic congestion conditions on the road under 35 miles per hour. In 2014, the Society of Automotive Engineers published a classification chart for automated vehicle systems featuring six different levels of capabilities. At the highest Level 5, the system can basically drive to any location, charted or uncharted, without any human intervention required. Musk made a decision to deliver on his word and roll out the Enhanced Autopilot update before the start of this year.

Tesla Enhanced Autopilot under Firmware 8.0 (2.50.185) brings along features that have been available on Model S and Model X with first generation hardware, to newer vehicles outfitted with the suite of eight cameras and twelve advanced ultrasonic sensors.

"Resolving an Autopilot HW2 bug that shows up when booting from a subzero cold-soak".

In addition, the update will bring Traffic Aware Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, and Autosteer to the enhanced cars mentioned, except for older Tesla models.

Even that move was not to make any money, though, as the company said it was "purely about increasing customer happiness".

Tesla owners could choose to pay more for the Autopilot software feature.

"These features operate on a new hardware and software platform".

After checking with Tesla, we can confirm that a vestigial version of the feature could have made its way in a build released to the first 1,000 cars with the new hardware this weekend, but it wasn't meant to be in the latest customer build since the system still doesn't act on the stop signs. Enhanced Autopilot will become better over time as this experience is gained and corner cases are addressed.

Drivers can only expect to use the feature in heavy-traffic condition at speed below 35mph.

Diving deeper into the details of the software update, Electrek.co has got its hands on the release notes for the update through an owner who is a part of the aforementioned test.
