Bundle up for New Year's Eve in California

Damage after a possible tornado in Kentwood La

The cool down starts Saturday, with a high of 39 degrees at the recording station at Denver International Airport. Gusty winds that blew through the area earlier in the week should subside with speeds around five to 10 miles per hour.

New Year's Day will be partly sunny with a high of 45, before clouds move in around 7 p.m. Rain is expected to begin overnight and will continue on and off through the day Monday.

The rain will clear overnight, giving way to a frosty first day of the year, with some snowfalls likely on high ground across the north and east of the country.

Those who plan to be outside for the night might be uncomfortably cold from high winds, with gusts that can reach up to 34 miles per hour, says the National Weather Service.

After midnight, there is a slight chance for drizzle and clouds will cover most of the sky. Showers are likely before noon and then drizzle in the afternoon.

The Weather Service also said it expects to issue a winter storm warning for the San Gabriel Mountains, with the most risky period for travelers there about 4 p.m. Saturday.

With brisk winds out of the southwest gusting up to 18 miles per hour it could be as high as 62 degrees Friday in downtown Denver, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. The chance of precipitation is 90 percent, with new snow accumulation of around 2 inches. The low is expected to be 28 degrees.
