Facebook and Google Dominate "Top Smartphone Apps of 2016" List

Facebook First on Nielsen List of Top 10 iOS Android Mobile Apps

"From new digital devices coming to the market (and grabbing headlines) to the growing interest in virtual reality thanks to new apps, 2016 was a big year for digital".

According to Nielsen, the top U.S. smartphone operating systems by market share is topped by Android with 53% followed closely by Apple's iOS with 45% market share. Facebook is claiming that title for another year. Even though Messenger annoyed some users who felt like Facebook was trying to force them into it, the app has done well this year.

Google's YouTube came in third, with more than 113 million average unique users each month. The chart below shows that the next set of apps belongs to Google, with Google Play ranking sixth place. This brilliant photo editor app allows men to become women by applying cosmetic items such as lipstick, foundation, eyeliner, brushes, etc. on their faces along with inserting other girly accessories such as celebrity hairstyles, earrings, nose rings, piercing pins, sunglasses, and much more. Internationally, Facebook has an average of 1.8 billion monthly users and is the largest social network in the world. As a result, the app found favor from about 65.51 million average monthly users. Twitter used to be on the list once upon a time, but the app has become less and less popular each year.

Google came in at fifth place in the Nielsen app rankings, with 106 million average unique users per month in 2016, an increase of 9 percent over 2015.

In the third quarter of the year, a majority of subscribers used Android (53%) and iOS (45%) devices to access their apps.

Facebook Proves Social Networking Matters

Amazon saw insane growth, seeing a massive 43 percent year-over-year gain.

Smartphone use grew to 88 percent of USA mobile subscribers, up 2 percent from the beginning of the year.

Nielsen's Electronic Mobile Measurement system is responsible for these findings.

The panelists are recruited online in English and include Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American, Native American and Alaskan Native and other mixed racial background consumer representation, according to the research giant.
