Kickers put excitement into extra points with their misses

Though it's hard to compare extra points throughout history-attempts start with a snap from the 15-yard line instead of the 2-yard line following a 2015 rule change-such struggles would be highlighted under almost any circumstances.

NFL place-kickers have failed on a season-high nine extra points in Sunday's early games, continuing a midseason spike that has highlighted the league's efforts to make the kick more hard.

Nine misses came during the eight games of the 1 p.m. ET slate, and six occurred during the first half of those games. Chicago Bears' kicker Connor Barth and Cincinnati Bengals' kicker Mike Nugent each missed two apiece.

A phase of the game most fans take for granted, extra points can completely change the momentum of the game, and a good kicker is a commodity it seems.

After Sunday, 36-of-67 two-point conversion attempts have been successful.

I'm not sure what Prater and Myers' excuses were though. Last year, after a similar (but not quite as "doinky") weekend, I wrote that National Football League coaches were still coming to grips with the extra point and needed to get more aggressive.

On Sunday, some of the balls kicked on extra-point attempts caromed off the uprights, others sailed wide of the goalposts and others got blocked.

Kickers missed left and right, had kicks blocked and hit the uprights.

The Giants were able to overcome the misses in a 22-16 win over Gould's former team, the Chicago Bears. Harrison dropped Cleveland's Cody Kessler in the third quarter to pass Jason Gildon (77) for the most sacks in the Steelers' history. He will have an MRI to confirm, but he was carted off the field following the injury and ruled out for the remainder of the game.

When the National Football League first started toying with extra point tries on an experimental basis at the Pro Bowl in 2015, Cody Parkey of the Philadelphia Eagles wasn't sure if the worth of a kicker would go up or down.

"I was starting to make a lot of 50-yard field goals 50 years ago and that was a big deal, " Stenerud, who won a Super Bowl ring in 1969 with the Kansas City Chiefs, said. "We should beat pretty much every team we play".

"We're going to follow that guy".
