Vikings Sign Kai Forbath To Replace Blair Walsh

The Vikings signed Forbath to replace struggling kicker Blair Walsh on Wednesday, a day after agreeing to terms - and a day after Walsh was waived by the nose-diving Vikings. He missed a number of field goals and extra point attempts, and the result was the Vikings cut him Tuesday. They finally made a decision to give Walsh another chance, but his mistake just before half-time against the Redskins sealed his fate.

Forbath overlapped with McDermott and Locke in the program for three years, and they're off-season workout partners in Los Angeles along with, coincidentally, Walsh, who missed his league-most fourth extra point last week at Washington. He went on to kick in 10 games for New Orleans last season. I think we gave him a lot of opportunities.

"He's been accurate", Zimmer said. If either had been successful, the Lions wouldn't have been able to force overtime with a 58-yard Matt Prater field goal as time expired.

Ironically, Forbath has spent most of his career in Washington.

According to the official Minnesota Vikings website, Kai Forbath will be taking on the duties as the team's kicker, handling field goals, extra points, and kickoff for the Vikings for the rest of the season.

Asked whether Walsh's playoff miss still hangs over the team, Zimmer said, "It wasn't a distraction to me".

"He's just an unbelievable guy, and I really have the utmost respect for him", he added. "I'm just here to take one kick at a time, and hopefully be here for a long time".

Walsh, 26, seemingly never recovered after his 27-yard shank in the closing minutes of the wild-card round versus Seattle in January sunk the Vikings, 10-9.

"It was something we felt like we needed to do, kind of move forward", head coach Mike Zimmer said. "Although Blair is a great kid and it was hard to do, it's just part of the business".

He and Locke worked out Wednesday at U.S. Bank Stadium, and Forbath gave rave reviews for the new venue.

The Vikings also have signed rookie offensive tackle Rashod Hill off Jacksonville's practice squad, after losing Jake Long for the season to an Achilles tendon injury.
