Jedinak saves Australia against Thailand in World Cup qualifier

"I think that's the third performance in a row where we haven't probably been as convincing as we'd like to be", Ryan said.

After starting the third round of qualification with back-to-back victories over Iraq and United Arab Emirates, the Socceroos have struggled to maintain their form with draws against Saudi Arabia and Japan.

That result, along with the prior 2-2 away stalemate with new Group B leaders Saudi Arabia, saw the undefeated Socceroos slip to second and looking for three points to wrap up the first half of the final phase.

The Socceroos could not blame preparations for their disjointed display, having arrived early for a week-long training camp ahead of the clash against the group's bottom team, who were on zero points after the four previous rounds.

Skipper Jedinak won and converted a second penalty though to level the scoreline shortly before Irvine's introduction - and despite some good touches from the Albion man in the middle and down the left flank, the Socceroos could not find a decisive strike to boost their qualification hopes.

"From our perspective, we have had three tough away trips".

Australia, who are still unbeaten in Group B, face Iraq in their next match on March 23.

Finish third and Australia still have a chance to qualify via a play-off against the third-placed team from Group A. That would be followed by a hard tie against the fourth-placed CONCACAF nation, which includes the likes of Mexico and the United States.

The focus so far has been reviewing last month's below-par 1-1 home draw with Japan.

"We have to reflect on the football tonight, which wasn't up to our usual standard and we will try to rectify that but overall, we are still quite comfortable".

"I think the major thing was turning over too much cheap ball and we're getting into those positions were we don't normally turn the ball over that cheaply and we're going forward and we're in our attacking formations and our attacking positions and we turn it over cheaply, then we're going to put ourselves under pressure and I think we did it too much", Ryan said.

"We approach every game in the same manner, which is to be dominant and control the match", he said.

Australia started commandingly taking the lead on seven minutes but the Thais worked their way back into the game to take a 2-1 lead by the 57th minute.

"Giving the ball away a lot, it affects the team".

"We're still in good shape. You get a better indication of how teams are going to set up and how they feel about you when you are in their own backyard", Jedinak said.
