Backs Name Lovullo their New Manager

The Diamondbacks have hired Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo as their next manager, as first reported by John Gambadoro of 98.7 Phoenix.

"Lovullo spent the last four seasons in the Red Sox" organization as the Bench Coach under John Farrell, including a stint as the interim manager from August 14, 2015-end of the season while Farrell was on medical leave.

The Diamondbacks were reportedly considering Phil Nevin along with Lovullo, among others, before they settled on the Red Sox bench coach. As soon as Hazen was introduced as GM of the D-Backs on October 16, there was speculation that Lovullo was soon to follow. Instead, with the Red Sox unsure on John Farrell's health, he agreed to remain in Boston for one more year in case Farrell needed to take another leave of absence or resign entirely. Former Boston GM Mike Hazen took over for Stewart, and it didn't take him very long to bring Lovullo out west to man the Arizona bench.

Internal candidates to replace Lovullo in Boston could include bullpen coach Dana Levangie, first-base coach Ruben Amaro Jr. and Triple-A manager Kevin Boles. Two years ago, he signed a two-year contract extension, which included club options for 2019 and 2020. The Red Sox went 28-21 under Lovullo and advanced to the playoffs before being eliminated by the Cleveland Indians in the American League Division Series.

Lovullo, 51, appeared in eight major-league seasons from 1988 to 1999 before embarking on a minor-league managing career that lasted from 2005 to 2010. Hitting coach Chili Davis and third base coach Brian Butterfield are both considered leaders in the locker room. Hazen left for a job in the Red Sox' front office in 2006.
